White Opaline Charles X Cup with Birds

A white opaline cup on small pedestal and gilt bronze mount finely chiseled with flowers. Both handles shaped in pigeons resting on curved branches and bent to drink. The pure shape and silhouette, like the delicate colour give this cup a great elegance.
Called "opal crystals" from the Empire, and later "opalines", this name designates several types of coloured glassware produced in France in the 19th century. The oldest opal crystals are lead glasses mixed with dyes. The old opacification recipes adapted to lead glass produce an opalescent material, known as "soap bubble" or "soapy opaline". Opal colours" are the other shades that result from the addition of metal oxides to this basic opal composition. These lenses, which are pink in colour, called "hydrangea" and then "pigeon's throat", obtained with gold salts, or "turquoise" blue thanks to cobalt or copper oxides, are often mounted in gilt bronze. An exceptional, fine and impressive, large pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver entrée dishes made by Walker and Hall; an addition to dining silverware collection.
These exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver entree dishes have a rounded oval form.
The surface of each cover is encircled with a fine band of bright cut engraved stylised scrolling leaf and undulating line decoration incorporating lozenge and floral shaped motifs.
The decoration to each dish incorporates a vacant cartouche to either side.
The surface of each base and the interior of the covers are plain and unembellished.
The rim of each entree dish base, in addition to the upper surface of the covers are encompassed with an applied stylised Roman leaf border.
Both covers retain the original fine and impressive fully hallmarked key fitting detachable shaped scrolling handles ornamented with further applied stylised Roman leaf borders.

A Massive Antique Japanese Arita Porcelain Plate by Kajiwara Kiln

On offer is a truly impressive blue and white porcelain plate of Hizen ware, from Arita in Japan, circa mid to late-19th century. The plate was made by Kajiwara Kikujiro (菊次郎, the second Kiku son) and/or Kajiwara Kikusaburo (菊三郎, the third Kiku son who died in 1883) of the Kajiware Family Kiln of in Arita. It was decorated in a superb design with blue under-glaze, clearly out of a hand of a master. In a Classic Japanese composition that was popular in the Meiji Period, the plate displays a riot of auspicious elements, arranged still in a surprisingly harmonious manner. Anchoring the center of the design is an eagle perched on the branch of a blooming cherry tree, its talons clenching the bark and its wings about to open. The motion of the its immediate taking off is palpable. The trunk and the branches of the old cherry tree provide a spacial frame for the arrangement of large peonies with foliage, bundles of chrysanthemums, Chinese bell...
