A Spanish Polychrome Earthenware Plate, 18th Century Depiciting a hare on abstract floral ground. Provenance: Private Australian Collection. Dimensions: Height: 3cm. Diameter: 33.8cm. Note: This is a majolica plate. Maiolica pottery originated in Italy during the Renaissance, in the mid-15th century. It is known for its opaque white glaze, which is achieved by applying a layer of tin oxide before adding colored glazes. The term "maiolica" is an Italian word that was originally used to describe a type of lusterware imported from Spain. This type of pottery was used for various objects, including dishes, bowls, and serving vessels.
