19th Century Hand-Carved Mahogany Chinese Export Humidor

About the Item

A "remarkable" hand carved mahogany humidor box according to the appraiser has detailed carving of junk boats and temples, and recalls Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong where the piece was made. There is a beautiful patina that has developed over the decades to this 19th century humidor that is accented by finely carved nature scenes. Hand-carved humidor boxes are special containers designed to store and maintain cigars at an optimal level of humidity. Cigars require specific conditions to preserve their quality, flavor, and aroma, and a humidor box serves this purpose by providing a controlled environment for cigar storage. Hand-carved humidor boxes are typically made of high-quality, seasoned wood, such as Spanish cedar or mahogany. Spanish cedar is a popular choice due to its excellent moisture-regulating properties and ability to enhance the flavors of stored cigars. These humidors are distinguished by their intricate and skilled hand-carved designs on the exterior. Skilled artisans meticulously carve patterns, motifs, or images into the wood, creating unique and visually appealing designs. These carvings can range from simple geometric patterns to complex and ornate designs, making each humidor a work of art. This humidor is in good condition except for a four-inch separation on the bottom of the container.
