About the Item

A French art deco modernist large case. Absolutely fabulous large case, created in Paris France during the art deco period, back in the 1925. We are sure that this gorgeous case was designed as a special custom order since the initials of the client SC are specially integrated to the design. The case is very unique and was carefully crafted in solid .900/.999 silver with layered yellow gold of 18 karats with high polished finish. It is embellished on both sides, with modernistic geometric patterns of multiples circles, which are inlaid-accented with applications of shiny orange-red and black lacquer. The box is fitted with concealed fifteen barrels hinge and a mechanical thumb pusher. A similar work by the artist The Art Deco The Art Deco art movement is defined by geometric shapes, abstract design, and lavish colors. This was the visual effect of luxury, glamour and techniques. A product of innovative new machinery, economic growth, and social freedoms, the style was first introduced in France before the World-War I, However, it wasn’t until the late 1920s, after the war, that it began to gain affection. Antique, traditional and new techniques were revitalized as artists, designers, silversmiths and architects applied the style across a broad range of visual fields, from opulent structures and interiors to fashionable handheld objects. Enamel Enamel is created from a powder of silica, feldspar, borax, quartz, lead, and various color oxides, applied to metal and fired at high temperatures to form a hard, scratch-resistant, and water-repellent finish. Each color in the enamel has a different melting point, allowing multiple colors to be layered without melting the previous ones. Historically, enamel was used for portraits, miniatures, jewelry, and snuffboxes, gaining popularity in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. The early 20th century saw a resurgence in enamel use, particularly in Art Deco designs, as innovations allowed for mass production. (From Wright Auctions with thanks). Materials: Silver, yellow gold, gilt gold, red & black lacquers and natural black onyx. Onyx: The thumb pusher is mount in a bezel setting, with 1 elongate cabochon cut carved from natural black onyx, with a weight of about 1 carat. Weight: 192.2 Grams, (123.21 Dwt). Measurements: 130.5 mm by 89 mm by 10 mm (5.14 x 3.51 x 0.39 Inches). Hallmarks: Both parts are stamped with French marks, the maker's mark JVT inside a lozange cartouche and the import/export weevil mark in an oval frame (Osprey-150) for the combined assay and warranty of the gold and the silver. Collateral: This case is accompanied by a presentation jewelry pouch. Condition: The overall condition of this case is very good. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the silver or the gold or the hinges. All lacquered inlaid and all parts are secured in their settings. Minimal scratches and marks consistent to the period, considering this is a piece of 100 years old. This cigarette case has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity.
