From our Boxes collection, we are pleased to offer this novelty Great Western Railway Bogie Coal Wagon Humidor. The humidor carved in oak modelled as a novelty railway bogie wagon carrying coal with working brass wheels, dampers and chassis components. The Bogie wagon modelled after a Great Western Railway No 3341 Blasius. 4-4-0 Bulldog class locomotive Bogie. The exterior is numbered and signed GWR 3341 with the registration number 230589 and features a hidden escutcheon within the coals. The interior is lined in cedar and contains three adjustable compartments for storing cigars. The Coal Bogie Wagon dates to the early 20th century during the Art Nouveau period Circa 1910.
Oak has many global variations. European Oak, also known as English or French Oak, is found in Europe. It is a well known and very popular wood due to its different types and strength yielding many uses. It can have a very simple clean look or a highly figured finish varying from tree to tree. European Oak can be Golden-yellow to light-brown in colour. Brown Oak is from the United Kingdom and its name is derived from its red-brown colour which is resulted from an attack by “beef-steak” fungus. This usually gives the wood an even colour, however, sometimes the wood can be streaked with a light brown giving it the name Tiger Oak.
Art Nouveau was an international style of art and architecture, especially the decorative arts. It was inspired by natural forms such as the curves of plants and flowers. Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism, movement and the use of modern materials particularly iron, glass and ceramics to create unusual forms. It was popular between 1890 and 1910 during the Belle Époque period and before the First World War. It was a reaction against the academic art, eclecticism and historicism of 19th-century architecture and decoration.
