Novelty Silver Plate Military Drum Biscuit Barrel

About the Item

In the Form of a Drum From our Accessories collection, we are pleased to offer this Novelty Silver Plate Military Drum Biscuit Barrel. The Biscuit Barrel of novelty form in the shape of a antique military drum with an Oak shell, silver plate batter head and base. The side of drum is finished with realistic silver plate snare support simulated ties. The handle of the biscuit barrel is formed as a leather strap with buckle to one size and is finished with a music sheet and drum sticks to the lid acting as the handle. The inside of the barrel is lined in ceramic and is stamped to the lid with a 0, start and numbers 34. The Military Drum Biscuit Barrel is firmly attributed to Daniel and Arter after several models we have previously sold stamped D&A. The Drum dates to the turn of the 20th century at the end of the Victorian period around 1900 Art Nouveau. Daniel and Arter was founded by Thomas Henry Daniel (d.1897) and Thomas Richard Arter (d.1915) in Birmingham in the late 19th century. Their first sterling silver hallmark was entered in Birmingham Assay Office in 1882 and they were active at Globe Nevada Silver Works, Highgate Street, Birmingham as makers of brass, nickel-silver and electro-plated spoons, forks, ladles, etc. (1892). The firm also had a London showroom at 62 Holborn Viaduct until 1896 and later at 98 Hatton Garden. Sterling silver hallmarks were entered in Sheffield Assay Office in 1906 and the London Assay Office in 1913. Both these hallmarks were scarcely used. In 1920 the firm was converted into a limited liability company and became Daniel & Arter Ltd. The business was closed in the 1930s and the residing stock was purchased by W.J.Baker & Sons Ltd. Oak has many global variations.European Oak, also known as English or French Oak, is found in Europe. It is a well known and very popular wood due to its different types and strength yielding many uses. It can have a very simple clean look or a highly figured finish varying from tree to tree. European Oak can be Golden-yellow to light-brown in colour. Brown Oak is from the United Kingdom and its name is derived from its red-brown colour which is resulted from an attack by “beef-steak” fungus. This usually give the wood an even colour, however, sometimes the wood can be streaked with a light brown giving it the name Tiger Oak.American White Oak, or White Oak, is found in North America. It is a very popular Oak used for many different functions. It can have a broad range of colour from yellow to a medium brown.American Red Oak, or Northern Red Oak, is also found in North America. It grows quicker and taller than White Oak which produces a coarser more open grain. Silver Plate refers to a method of applying a thin layer of silver to a base metal such as brass. Therefore it refers to an item which is not solid silver but plated to the outer coating. Art Nouveau was an international style of art and architecture, especially the decorative arts. It was inspired by natural forms such as the curves of plants and flowers. Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism, movement and the use of modern materials particularly iron, glass and ceramics to create unusual forms. It was popular between 1890 and 1910 during the Belle Époque period and before the First World War. It was a reaction against the academic art, eclecticism and historicism of 19th century architecture and decoration. Victorian an era of British History corresponding approximately with the reign of Queen Victoria from the 20th of June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901 however, there are arguments stating that the Victorian era is actually from 1820 until 1914 proceeded by Georgian era and followed by the Edwardian era.
