About the Item

This most pleasing novelty box has been meticulously hand-made by a highly skilled English bookbinder in the late 19th century. To anybody looking, it genuinely looks like a small collection of fine hand-bound leather and gilt-tooled period books. In reality, it is a cleverly constructed desk stationery box of generous scale and proportion. The box secretly opens from the centre line of the book's front binding and hinges back from the top to reveal a wonderfully colourful interior which is divided into four graduated compartments, and each section is covered in decorative hand marbled papers finished with red leather edging which matches the red suede lining to the underside of the box to protect polished surfaces. The box is a genuine work of art and is in remarkable condition, showing very few signs of wear or fading. English, circa 1890 Height 21.5cm x width 24cm x depth 14.5cm
