A mid 19th century Italian grand tour Sorrento marquetry box circa 1860

About the Item

A very fine Italian marquetry box dating to circa 1860 and made in the Sorrento region of Italy where local craftsmen were renowned for making these beautiful fine marquetry objects. This example is constructed from walnut and veneered in dark olivewood which has been meticulously inlaid with fine panels worked in mixed coloured veneers. The sides each have an individual floral display bordered with a fine Tunbridge style banding whilst the top has a similar boarder. It has a unique central panel inlaid with a local musician playing a large traditional wind instrument whilst being accompanied by a very similarly dressed man who is in high spirits and dancing to the music. The lid is hinged and retains its original working lock and key and opens to reveal a useful plain interior. The underside of the box is fitted with a green suede leather lining to protect delicate surfaces. This fine box is in excellent original condition.
