About the Item

19th century inlaid Killarney ware writing slope circa 1870. Beautiful Irish killarney region writing slope, beautifully inlaid with the various woods they used to craft with. Killarney woodwork became popular in the 1800's when tourism began to become popular. Decorated with florals and made in arbutus wood, this piece is a fine example of the miniature woodwork techniques the region became know for. Inlaid to all surfaces, the twin opening flaps open to form the writing slope with original velvet fabric. Top slope double backs to reveal further storage. Compartments underneath the top flap, working lock and key. Expected very minor shrinkage from age to fall, minor surface marks but woodwork in original condition with no restoration. Wear to slope fabric, but original.
