About the Item

Antique Black Forest Hand-Carved Brown Wooden Trinket Jewellery Box Continental Wood, Textile, Metal c. 1900 Dimensions: H x W x D: 9cm x 15cm x 9.5cm This hand-carved trinket box is crafted in the renowned Black Forest style. Emerging in the 19th century and remaining popular well into the 20th, this style is characterised by intricate carvings of animals and nature, celebrating the beauty of the natural world. The Black Forest style was particularly popular in Germany and Switzerland, which is most likely where this box was made. The shaped body of the box is fully hand-carved, featuring a design centred around acorns, a motif rich in symbolism within the Black Forest tradition. In Celtic and Germanic cultures, oak trees, the source of acorns, are regarded as symbols of immortality, and across cultures, acorns universally represent growth and resilience. While the main body of the box is adorned with delicately carved leaves, the hinged lid features a high-relief carving of acorns, prominently displaying their hidden meaning. Framed by an oval medallion and additional decorative patterns, their significance is carefully emphasised. The box is supported by four shaped wooden feet, and its interior is lined with blue textile, adding a soft and refined touch. Trinket boxes like this were especially popular during the 19th and 20th centuries, when leisure travel was on the rise and people eagerly sought souvenirs that reflected local folk traditions. This box stands as a fine example of that custom. Monochromatic in colour, the piece draws all attention to its masterful carving, beautifully showcasing the artistry and symbolism of the Black Forest style.
