Antique French Oval Gilt Finished Metal Box with Signed Hand-Painted Portrait

About the Item

This small jewelry or decorative box has no maker's signature, but presumed to have originated from France and date to approximately 1900 and done in a Renaissance Revival style. The oval shaped box is composed of metal with a gilt finish and features a hand-painted portrait panel of a young woman, which may be signed 'Herot'?, but is somewhat illegible. The portrait is accented with a raised border with floral details as is the top of the box and sides, which are done with a stylized foliage motif. The box is lined with a tulip patterned cloth, which may, or may not be original.
