Antique Japanese Cloisonne Meiji Enameled Kogo Incense Box with Ho Ho Bird

About the Item

An antique Japanese Meiji Era covered enamel brass kogo or box for incense. Circa: late 19th century to early 20th century. The box is enameled with polychrome floral and foliage patterns and an image of a Phoenix bird on the top of the lid made in the Cloisonne technique. Unmarked. A kogo is used for holding incense and historically most often at the tea ceremony, the temple, or for the small worship area in the home. The kogo is also a wonderful item of character to decorate with, in addition to placing small items in, and around the house or office.
