About the Item
This is an antique knife box. An English, flame mahogany cutlery canteen with oak fitted interior, dating to the Georgian period, circa 1770.
Superb craftsmanship with beautiful figuring and useful proportion
Displays a desirable aged patina and in good order throughout
Select flame stocks present rich caramel hues and striking grain interest
Chased boxwood inlays decorate surface edges with a lighter caramel colour
Of distinctive shield form, the canted lid opens smoothly on shield shaped hinges
Lid interior accentuated with an inlaid boxwood six pointed star
Arranged as a canteen of 31 individual pieces or 25 pieces with six pairs of tongs
Canteen crafted from oak, with medium caramel hues and further boxwood inlay
Dressed with a brass shield lock escutcheon with clasp — key absent
Drop handles over shaped backplates adorn each side of the canteen
The whole standing upon a trio of delightful brass paw feet
This is an exceptional antique knife box, with original, quality fitted interior setting it apart from more common, later converted examples. A fascinating example of mid Georgian craftsmanship. Solid joints and construction, delivered waxed, polished and ready for the kitchen or dining room.
