Antique Scandinavian silver marriage box, love birds, 18th century
About the Item
A wonderful antique Scandinavian or Dutch silver marriage box.
It is crafted in sterling silver, late 18th century and is designed as a hinged, shaped and lobed box, opening up in the centre to a rich gilt interior.
The top of the box is surmounted with a sweet pair of love birds and the box is naively engraved to the body.
Unusually this particular box does have a makers mark to the inner base, the outer base inscribed with initials M. N. D. B.
These boxes were often gifted as love tokens and used to contain spices or smelling salts as vinaigrettes.
Such a sweet and romantic piece.
Condition:
Good used condition overall, light surface wear commensurate with age.
