Art Nouveau Lidded Oak Box with hand carved sinuous floral theme, circa 1900

About the Item

This is a good quality hand made hardwood lidded box with fine quality hand carved floral themes, which we date to the late 19th C / early 20th C Art Nouveau period, Circa 1900. The box is rectangular made of hardwood, probably oak. It has a hinged lid with the carved top curved at its edges as per the images. The inside has two compartments separated by a wood divider. The lid and base section sides are all intricately hand carved with a typical Art nouveau organic floral design, having a central large flower with buds set amongst a sinuous curvy leaf arrangement all in good detail. This box has developed a very good colour, particularly to the top, through use and polishing. The box is in very good condition and would make a very good jewellery or keepsake box for the desk or dressing table. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ART NOUVEAU This late 19th C / early 20th C period was Inspired largely by the natural world, some of the main characteristics of Art Nouveau are curvature, floral motifs and sinuous lines Art Nouveau designs generally have organic forms drawn from nature like florals, vines, and swirly patterns.
