"Barc in the Sky", Art Deco Covered Box w/ Sailboat in the Clouds by Simonetto

About the Item

An extraordinary example of high style Art Deco design by one of Italy's masters in the 1930s -- Angelo Simonetto -- this covered, oval ceramic box depicts a golden barc or sailboat floating in a deep blue sky filled with purple-tinged clouds. Simonetto designed this box for the Galvani ceramic works in Pordenone, Italy, and his original painting for this box is held by the Museo civico d'arte di Pordenone at the Palazzo Ricchieri. Along with Gio Ponti, Guido Andlovitz and others, Simonetto brought a freshness and modern stylization to ceramic design, moving Italy away from traditional, staid decoration going back decades or centuries. The piece is well marked on the bottom.

"Hunter in Paradise", Art Deco Humidor in Cast Iron by Elmberg, Sweden
By Carl Elmberg
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Although Sweden is known for its furniture and artisanry in a stylized Art Deco manner, often characterized as Swedish Grace, it is not so well known that Swedish artists led the way in creating fine pieces from humble materials such as cast iron or pewter. This humidor with high-relief sculpture in cast iron by Carl Elmberg is a fine example. The figure of a nude male archer chasing a deer, accompanied by a female nude figure in a wooded, idyllic setting, exhibits a beautiful texture and deep color thanks to the material Elmberg chose. The piece was cast by the famed Näfveqvarns Bruk foundry, which in the 1910s collaborated with the Swedish Society of Craft and Industrial Design to sponsor a competition which encouraged new and modern designs by artists such as Anna Petrus, Erik Grate...

"Sur le Pont D'Avignon", Charming Art Deco Box Celebrating Traditional Song
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Although it has endured many scuffs and indignities, this extremely rare Art Deco box still charms, the figures on its lid playing the violin and dancing to the old children's tune of "Sur le Pont D'Avignon." The ancient bridge in Avignon, Provence has been the subject of song since the 16th century, but the song that is beloved today was first published in the mid-19th century. Here, the artist depicts a central fiddler flanked by two couples with elongated limbs, wide-brimmed hats and elegant dress. The sides of the box depict the wide arches of the bridge, with fish swimming in the water below. The exterior is covered with a paper printed in color lithography, and the interior is painted candy apple red. The scene is signed "Tolmer," perhaps Roger Tolmer...
