The whip carved wood fox music box with glass eyes, is a finely crafted example of late 19th century decorative carving from the Black Forest region of southern Germany. Rendered in the form of a seated fox, the figure is carved from wood using a whip carving technique, which creates a highly textured surface with sweeping gouge marks that mimic the movement of a whip, often used to suggest fur.
The fox is fitted with glass eyes, lending it a lifelike and expressive quality. Housed within the base is a wind up music box mechanism, though it currently requires maintenance to be operational. These charming, character rich objects were popular as souvenirs and decorative items in the Victorian period and are now sought after for their unique craftsmanship and enduring appeal. Circa 1890s.
