About the Item
Brass Wall Utensil Holder, Empire, Early 19th C, with Roman Goddess with Putti
This highly ornate utensil holder is made in repoussé brass. It features a scene of a Roman Goddess in a chariot drawn by a lion, surrounded by Erotes (small cherub-like beings, named after Eros, and symbols of love). The goddess being portrayed in a lion-drawn chariot and holding a cornucopia means it is most likely Cybele, originally an eastern Anatolian fertility goddess and called the Great Mother (Magna Mater) by the Romans. The Roman Senate ordered her worship after consultation with the Sybilline Oracle, who advised them to institute the cult of Cybele in order to win the Punic War against Carthage and its general Hannibal, who had invaded the Italian peninsula with African elephants. This reflects Empire sensibilities and influences from the Roman and Eastern Mediterranean, also evident in the inclusion of a classical urn surrounded by two sphinxes in the lower part of the piece. Around these two scenes, various ornamental patterns line the edges, including droplet patterns.
