About the Item

Early nineteenth century Chinese chinoiserie black lacquer box with gold decoration. The exterior shows a finely detailed village scene with houses, trees, and landscape elements painted in gold over a deep black ground with traces of red beneath the surface. The shape is especially beautiful with soft undulating edges that give the piece a refined presence. This was likely a candy box or small storage box made for the English market during the early nineteenth century. The lacquer is in remarkable condition for its age with a rich surface and crisp decoration. The interior is three and a half inches deep and retains its original black lacquer.
A charming and elegant example of early chinoiserie work and a decorative piece that displays beautifully.
