Chinese Mother of Pearl Mounted Box with Four Boxes and Counters, 18th Century

About the Item

An exceptional and rare Chinese mother of pearl mounted games box with four matching interior boxes containing gaming counters and dating from the 18th century. The rectangular shaped box has a hinged cover, the wooden body mounted with deep carved mother of pearl panels with flowering blossoms the central blossom forming a cartouche engraved with two love birds. The hinged cover opens to reveal and original red silk interior with four compartments each containing a finely engraved mother of pearl box with the matching love birds design to the covers and containing 43 various rectangular shaped counters engraved with playing card suits. The box has its original velvet inset base and is not marked. Offered in good condition with some minor losses and repairs as might be expected with a box of this age.

An unusual and fine antique Chinese Qing lacquered and inlaid papier mache handled sewing box with decorative panels dating from latter 19th or early 20th century. The sewing box is of round cylindrical shape with a swing carry handle and is inlaid with mother of pearl and abalone. The body is made up of eight oval shaped scenes of typical Chinese style with buildings and people picked out with inset abalone and mother of pearl and highlighted and contained within a gilded border. These are set between bands of patterned abalone and against a blue silk background. A similar band of abalone is applied to the swing handle.
