Chinese Petite Repoussé Traveling Mirror, c. 1930
About the Item
This petite traveling mirror dates to the early 20th century and is crafted with a metal frame embellished with allover repoussé decoration. Designed after Qing-dynasty vanity boxes, the lid hinges upwards to reveal a rectangular mirror and a shallow drawer opens from the front, possible intended for makeup or jewelry.
The lid is decorated with an idyllic scene of robed figures in a courtly garden, surmounted by plum blossom branches. The sides are decorated with the symbols for double happiness (囍 shuāngxǐ) and longevity (壽 shòu), each flanked by two butterflies, symbols of happiness and bliss.
From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
