About the Item

LIMOGES ENAMEL PANELS From our Decorative collection, we are delighted to offer this French Napoleon III Ormolu and Enamel Jewellery Box. The Jewellery Box of casket form mounted in heavily detailed ormolu (bronze-dore) is raised upon four mythical Phoenix feet. The Jewellery Box with Top loop handle features four individual Limoges enamel plaques each depicting classical motifs and figures with cherubs, portraits, mythical animals and fruits. One portrait depicts Julius Caesar with a laurel wreath and the second likely depicts Daphne with a similar laurel wreath. The Jewellery Box opens to reveal its purple velvet lining with beautifully cast ormolu mounts inside the lid perfect for storing jewellery and personal accessories. The French Ormolu and Enamel Jewellery Box dates to the second half of the 19th century circa 1870 and the start of the Belle Epoque period under the reign of Napoleon III. LIMOGES enamel has been produced at the city of Limoges, in south-western France, over several centuries up to the present. There are two periods when it was of European importance. From the 12th century to the late 14th century there was a large industry producing objects decorated with champlevé enamel. Most of the survivals, which are estimated to be around 7,500 pieces and probably most of the original production are religious objects. DAPHNE is a nymph or huntress of Artemis. Her parentage varies, depending on the source, but it’s generally understood that her father is a river god Peneus (Ladon) and her mother was either the nymph Creusa (Gaia). ORMOLU is the technique of applying finely ground, high-carat gold–mercury amalgam to an object of bronze. The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold coating. The French refer to this technique as bronze doré and in English it is often referred to as gilt bronze. It is a finishing technique which adds an overall gold look to any object without the massive cost and impracticality of making an object out of solid gold. Mercury was outlawed in the 1830’s in France however it was still used until the early 1900s. BRONZE an alloy consisting primarily of copper with approximately 12–12.5% tin and often with the addition of other metals (including aluminium, manganese, nickel, or zinc) and sometimes non-metals, such as phosphorus, or metalloids such as arsenic or silicon depending on the age of the bronze and its origin. The additions of other metals produce a range of alloys that are usually harder than copper alone and carry useful properties such as strength. The earliest known use of bronze dates to the 5th millennium BCE from Iranian plateau, the bronze mix consists of arsenical copper and copper-arsenide. The earliest tin-copper-alloy recovered is dated to circa 4650 BCE and was found in Plocnik, Serbia. It is believed to have been smelted from a natural tin-copper ore. BELLE EPOQUE is a period of French, Belgian and European history. It began in the early 1870’s and to ended with the outbreak of World War I in 1914. NAPOLEON III (Second Empire style), was a highly eclectic style of architecture and decorative arts which used elements of many different historical styles and also made innovative use of modern materials. It flourished during the reign of Napoleon III (1852-1871) in France and had an important influence across Europe and North America. Major examples of the style include the Opéra Garnier, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Church of Saint Augustine, and the Philadelphia City Hall. ENAMEL (vitreous enamel) also known as porcelain enamel, is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 °C. The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating. The word vitreous comes from the Latin vitreous, meaning “glassy”.
