About the Item
Magnificent Louis XIV period messenger box, late 17th early 18th century.
This pretty box is made of leather-covered wood decorated with copper nails on the front and top of the box.
This rare box has a beautiful wrought iron hasp lock engraved with rounded patterns and a handle on the top of the wrought iron lid as well.
Due to its age and use, the box may have some missing parts;
One of the 3 hinges is no longer attached but the other 2 hinges and the 2 side ropes allow the lid to be held in place.
Rare box in good condition with a beautiful old patina, which gives it all its charm.
This box is a wonderful witness to the end of the 17th / beginning of the 18th century. The decoration and work of this box make it a vestige of French history.
France - late 17th early 18th century
The Louis XIV style is a furnishing style covering more or less the period of the reign of Louis XIV (1661 to 1715).
This style is characterized by the majesty and richness of its furnishings.
The Louis XIV style follows the Louis XIII style. The furniture is increasingly luxurious, but unlike previous styles, it is almost no longer inspired by architecture. There are two kinds of furniture: ceremonial furniture richly decorated with veneers and inlays (especially with André-Charles Boulle), solid gilt wood and bourgeois furniture in solid wood.
The style is characterized above all by its absolute symmetry and an important and ostentatious dimension. The Louis XIV style is of Italian and ancient inspiration.
The style emerged with the advent of the reign of Louis XIV in 1661 and lasted until the end of the 17th century. In 1690, on the death of Lebrun, decorator to the King, the style declined and was gradually replaced by the Regency style.
The Palace of Versailles is obviously extremely and lastingly marked by the Louis XIV style. His long reign made it possible to impose the unique style of the Grand Siècle and to leave a lasting mark on the decorative arts of this period of classicism. The Louis XIV style will also reach its peak when the royal court moved to Versailles in 1682.

Late 19th century - France
The Lavolaille firm, successor to Katz et Cie, was founded in 1845, specializing in trunks for sales representatives. Made of wood, with strong handles and straps, and with interior layouts that varied according to the object, they were the ancestors of the "marmotte".
Lavolaille would later join forces with A. Maille, another trunk manufacturer specialized in commercial travelers.
Most trunks are covered with black canvas, steel or brass edging and decorative upholstery nails on the top or front of the trunk.
Some trunks had nails signed "Lavolaille", like Louis Vuitton nails.
