About the Item

This superb Italian box dates to circa 1930. It is made from wood, and the exterior is covered in fine leather, which is panelled with gilt tooling. The top of the box is inset with a pietra dura panel which shows a wonderfully detailed landscape with the famous Florence Cathedral with its iconic domed roof and tower, with the sea in the background. This panel is a fine piece of craftsmanship. It is made up of multiple neatly cut pieces of different coloured marbles. Each is chosen for its relevant colour and natural grain to represent the different elements of the landscape. The top hinges open to reveal the interior, which is finished in a light golden timber with a French polished finish. The underside of the box is also leather-lined lined and it is neatly stamped in one corner, Made in Italy. This rare box is a very fine example. It is in excellent original condition with some slight age-related fading to the leather. Height 4.2cm x width 13cm x depth 10cm
