Japanese Laquered Box and Lid Hand Painted Scene, Meiji Period, circa 1900

About

This is a beautiful papier mâché, circular lacquered lidded box, which we attribute to being made in Japan, very early in the 20th century, late Meiji period, circa 1900. This is a very decorative box with a delicately hand painted waterside scene of a pagoda or pavilion by the shore with trees on the Hillside, two boats on the water and a large tree in the foreground. The base color is black with the painting very well done using a burnt red, beige, silver and gold gilt, all in varying shades. The inside and base of the box and lid are black lacquered.
