About the Item

Napoleon III box. Marquetry. France, 19th century. Rectangular wooden box with a flat top and supported on circular legs that presents a front opening with a key lock and a hinged hinged top lid. Inside, there is a flat horizontal space with the edges enhanced with two lines of clear marquetry (the same as the lower area of the lid and the interior of the folding part of the front), and three drawers under it, also enhanced with details. clear. These types of pieces were used to contain different elements (writing notes, jewelry, documents, etc.) either during trips or to be placed on a table and used there. The exterior decoration, centered on the front and upper part, consists of delicate plant-themed compositions and a strong classicist influence made with wood of different shades: shields, flowers, scrolls, cartridges, leaves, etc. The sides of the box are enhanced only with lines of wood in a lighter tone. In general, it is sought that the decorative elements, arranged harmoniously and symmetrically in various shades and light colors, enhance the dark tone of the wood. These types of boxes or chests were very common throughout the 19th century in Europe. In the time of Napoleon III (emperor between 1852 and 1870), they used to be decorated both in Boulle-type marquetry and in wood, highlighting works from houses such as the Maison Berthet & Peret (work preserved in private collections). · Size: 58,5x38,5x22 cm International Buyers – Please Note: for those articles that need Export Permits (those older than 100 years), the obtaining of the Permit will be processed without additional expenses (if you choose the seller sends it to you), but the period for the obtention of it may vary from 10 to 35 days.
