Rare Late 18th/Early 19th Century French Colored Straw Marquetry Sewing Box

About the Item

A rare French marqueterie de paille (colored straw marquetry) sewing work box. Delicately hand-crafted in Provincial Burgundy, France, late 18th / early 19th century. An extremely rare complete example, featuring an exceptionally executed inlaid top in whimsical country scene depicting hunter on horseback pursuing a stag deer, with exquisite fine detail and texture, and retaining the original vibrant pale coloring with beautifully aged warm mellow patina. Rectangular shaped chest form, having a hinged lid opening to reveal a visually striking fitted interior, featuring a flat mirror plate, needle cushions, lidded compartments that all lift up including a central lidded compartment with flower motif, over checkerboard floor, flanked on both sides by sloped chambers, above hidden lower drawers. This technique is similar to traditional wood marquetry. In the 17th century clergymen, sailors, and prisoners practiced it, giving birth to a very rich but rarely used form of decorative arts. Typically, the straw used is rye straw cultivated and harvested in Burgundy, France. The straw is dried and dyed, then opened and flattened in the craftsmans workshop. Sure to add a touch of sophisticated elegance, splash of vivid color, rich artistic character, and charming historical depth to any space!
