About the Item

Regency Penwork Decorated Box c1810. "A sycamore veneered box decorated in penwork. The sides of the box are decorated with what looks like stylized marigolds. The shape of the box is complex in that it incorporates gently concave lines which soften its tapering form. It stands on gilded feet. A piece with many Regency characteristics, it combines neoclassical features with naturalistic decoration." The top of the box illustrated with a silhouetted scene of a mother and children, one child playing a triangle and the other chasing a squirrel. The family group is accompanied by a stylized black female carrying a basket of flowers on her head. This image is characteristic of silhouettes by Auguste Edouart, see signed image by Edouart. A box by the same maker is illustrated in; "Antique Tea Boxes, Tea Caddies, & Society 1700-1880," by Antigone Clarke & Joseph O'Kelly, Pg 228, Figure 409. We have been a respected name in antiques for over 30 years with a large collection of period furniture, art, books, jewelry and decorative accessories.
