About the Item
A very pretty, small oak box intricately carved to all four sides. The front centred with a goose and lion rampart flaning a tree. And panels caved with names and the date Anno 1722. The side panels carved with stylised tulips, a ladder leaning against an apple tree, geometric symbols, foliate scrolls and pinwheels The top with intricate geometric intertwined flowers and scrolls. The carving is so delicately executed, deep and fine, each panel must have taken a month of steady work.
The box is early 1700s and original had split wire hinges but these have been replaced with small steel hinges which appear 19th century.
The bible inside this box was clearly much treasured and valued.
It is inscribed to ‘Mary with much love from Daddy, Christmas 1929’ and contains pressed four leaf clovers, cards of Baptism of other members of Mary’s family, small notes, bookmarks and pressed flowers.
I believe that Mary may have married Edward Paul Fooks whose grandfather was the Reverend Thomas Fooks of Hartley in Kent.
Whilst the box is late 1600s in date the carving is later and mentions several names, it may eveb have been carved by Mary’s father before being given to his much loved daughter in 1929.
A very emotive and beautiful time capsule.

A good pair of 19th century still life paintings, oil on board by the British Victorian Period artist Henry P. Gill who flourished in the 1880s and 1890s.

The second with cut lemons in a glass surrounded by grapes, pear, apple, white currants and a peach with a wasp hovering above. Also signed to lower margin right ‘H. Gill’.
Extremely beautiful and realistic and in original period frame and gilt slip. To verso of the board inside is a label which reads ‘Glass and Fruit, November 14th 1891. Presented to my wife Kate by J.A. Scott.

17th Century English Oak Strong Box c. 1640
Located in Heathfield, GB
A rare English oak strong box retaining original and elaborately forged iron lock plate and lock with escutcheon cover and with the original working key.
The case with original beautifully shaped corner brackets and original carrying handles – all the hardware fixed with the original rivets.
The interior with seven oak drawers with attractive original handles, three over two banks of two, each drawer with very fine boarded linings in wainscot oak with nailed up bottoms.
These chests were used by merchants who travelled and traded. The drawers may have contained precious gemstones such as diamonds, gold or jewellery, spices or coins. The fall descends to form a desk at which to write, weigh or count. This example no doubt travelled aboard ships of the day carrying cargo and travellers around the world – ships like the wooden hulled Mayflower which took the Pilgrim Fathers to America in 1620. The strong box has probably visited many lands and carried all manner of exotic and highly valuable items. If only it could talk!
