17th Century English Oak Strong Box c. 1640

About the Item

A rare English oak strong box retaining original and elaborately forged iron lock plate and lock with escutcheon cover and with the original working key. The case with original beautifully shaped corner brackets and original carrying handles – all the hardware fixed with the original rivets. The interior with seven oak drawers with attractive original handles, three over two banks of two, each drawer with very fine boarded linings in wainscot oak with nailed up bottoms. These chests were used by merchants who travelled and traded. The drawers may have contained precious gemstones such as diamonds, gold or jewellery, spices or coins. The fall descends to form a desk at which to write, weigh or count. This example no doubt travelled aboard ships of the day carrying cargo and travellers around the world – ships like the wooden hulled Mayflower which took the Pilgrim Fathers to America in 1620. The strong box has probably visited many lands and carried all manner of exotic and highly valuable items. If only it could talk! A beautiful and very rarely seen early English example set on a most attractive hand made oak stand with gun barrel turned legs and of pegged construction. The oak of the stand has been very well matched in colour and grain to that of the strong box and the form of the stand is stylistically correct for the early to mid 17th Century but was probably made in the early 19th century. The box would not originally have had a stand and the stand was made after its travelling days were over so that it could sit at a useful, visible height to be enjoyed and used. Such a lovely piece of early English oak in excellent condition for age and original throughout. Dimensions are: 32.5 inches wide, 19 inches deep and 47.5 inches high. Floor to top of stand is 28.5 inches. For metric please multiply by 2.5

A Very Good Early English Oak Coffer c. 1600
Located in Heathfield, GB
With a lovely colour and rich patina, this superb English oak coffer dates from c. 1600. Set on tall feet and of a very good size and rarely seen compact proportion, this would be a perfect linen box at the end of a bed or a beautiful focal point in any room. The carving particularly finely executed with stylised acanthus leaf extending from the front feet to the top of the stiles and with adorsed foliate S-scrolls across the frieze. Each fielded panel superbly carved with sophisticated geometric pattern, leaves and twinned circles - reminiscent of formal knot gardens - and with running strapwork along the intermediate framing. The bottom frame carved with expansive lunettes with small flying ribbons indicating that the chest is probably of North Country origins. Retaining its original candle box which also has a wonderful patina. The three fielded panel lid original also with channel carving to the borders. To the inner face of the panelled lid are the remnants of a very early hand written and decorated paper label for Peter and Anne ? – presumably one time owners of the chest. The rear legs have been re-tipped as is normal in early oak coffers of this great age. There are some losses, old dings and marks consistent with age and a small number of old worm holes to the top of the right hand framed side panel – long since dead. The original wire hinges have been replaced in the 18th century with substantial riveted blacksmith hand forged iron H hinges...

The chair is extremely comfortable and solid with a good width between the arms, deep well padded seat and gentle rake to the padded back. Upholstered in a moss green high quality velvet with matching fringed braid in very good condition also. Beautiful Regency Coromandel Writing Box c. 1830
Located in Heathfield, GB
A very fine Regency example, in solid coromandel of a superb colour. The dark brown/black grain highlighted with creams and golds which run in natural stripes all over the box, Coromandel was a much prized exotic timber imported into the London docks and was usually used in small sections of veneer only due to the high cost of this wood. Here it is used in the solid and has developed a good patina. A further high quality detail is that solid brass string inlays have been added – a double band to the top and front – which sets off the Coromandel very well and is all inlaid by hand. The central brass reserve to the top and brass escutcheon are shaped as open flower heads and are original also. The box retains its original working steel key and opens on original hinges to reveal the writing slope. This is inset with a new black leather skiver with gold tooled border. The original skiver was black but was damaged and torn so we have replaced it with an identical skiver and matching gold tooling. The inner writing slope is solid mahogany and it locks into the top of the box with small brass slide bolts. With the bolts released the slope folds and there is a small compartment beneath the slope in both sections of the box – perfect for storing paper and envelopes. There is also a compartment for inkwells and quill pens. A quill pen is designed to rest in an ebonised mahogany curved boat which is removable. It may seem strange to us now that feather and quill...
