Victorian Lady's Necessaire Table Top Toiletry Box, American, circa 1900
Unique necessaire; used for carrying a lady's toilet articles and "necessary" items for grooming, including a drawer at the base for additional items such as jewelry and/or letter writing implements. The hardwood case is wrapped in a celluloid green floral design, with Victorian scenes to the front panels, and a pastoral farm image to the top. The front two panels depict a young couple in different poses. Original fancy brass mounts and escutcheons complete the exterior decoration. The interior is lined in pink satin material, with fitted compartments to hold and store a multiplicity of grooming items, with a mirror in the backdrop. There are eight grooming items, which includes two cream jars, a nail buffing pad, a needle, a spring loaded hair clasp, hand mirror, hair brush, and a nail file. Everything is in excellent all original condition, and wear is commensurate with age and use. Of interest is the patent number on the hand mirror (see image) "made under patent 671519" from which we glean an abundant amount of information. The piece was patented on June 18th, 1900 by Edward Kasebier, Brooklyn, New York. He was married to one of the most influential photographers of that era, Gertrude Kasebier, famous for her image depictions of Native American Indians, predominantly the Sioux tribe. Provenance: From the prestigious and renowned Western and saloon collection of George Cross 2006 to my own personal collection. Dimensions: (open) 16" wide x 15" high x 10" deep (closed) 12" wide x 12" high x 7" deep.
