This is a vintage cleric's writing slope. A Japanese, red lacquer travelling correspondence box, dating to the Art Deco period, circa 1930.
Striking writing case with delightful Japanese iconography
Displays a desirable aged patina and in good order throughout
Rich red lacquer finish presents brilliant warmth
Hand-painted decorations adorn the fascia
Top hosts a fine traditional landscape of a scenic bridge over a riverbank
Opening the case reveals the Mount Fuji inspired letter sleeve, reflecting upon the gloss finish
Folding outwards to the writing slope form, with original green baize
Both halves of the slope open to reveal storage below, with a useful drawer to the side
Dressed with a strikingly decorative lock escutcheon — untested, key absent
This is a superb vintage cleric's writing slope, with a highly decorative appearance. Graced with strong Japanese Art Deco taste and a treat for the desktop or within a collection. Solid joints and construction, delivered waxed, polished and ready to enjoy.
