About the Item
A strict, geometric, cube-shaped Art Deco cigarette box produced by the Swedish manufacturer Ystad Metall in the 1930s. Crafted from pewter, it features a brass hinge for the lid and an interior lined with stained wood. The lid is topped with a decorative, ornament-shaped knob. Bears the Ystad Metall 'YM' hallmark stamped underneath.
The Swedish metal company Ystad Metall was founded in the southern town of Ystad in 1919, producing decorative objects crafted mainly from copper and brass. In the 1920s, pewter grew in popularity, and a wide range of objects were introduced using this soft and easily worked material. Over the years, many renowned artists collaborated with the company, including Ivar Ålenius-Björk, Carl-Einar Borgström, and Gunnar Ander. The company’s most famous product is the Liljan candlestick, introduced at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.
