Madagascar ebony, rosewood, bone, and gilded brass table cabinet
About the Item
The low countries counted Theodore de Voghel as one of the greatest makers of these cabinets who was employed by the Royal Armory of Naples. One of his pieces is conserved in London in the museum. Between 1588 and 1600 he was working on the intarsia of the sacristy of the Certosa di San Martino, Naples He was an esteemed artisan, also working for the nobility in Naples, fulfilling their desire for precious furnishings; the princess wished to create original and finely made pieces to translate their importance and power and he created pieces which were symbolic in their eyes. This stipi is the first example of such inlay. Voghel was also a master gunsmith for the king of Spain, whose firearms in this period were often ornamented with rosewood and engraved ivories.
