Mid-19th Century Red Enameled Keepsake Box with Mythological Scene

$10,259.87

About

Rectangular, red enamel keepsake box with a gilt bronze frame that is very elaborately sculpted with leafy scrollwork. The body of the box is decorated with medallions featuring multicolored bouquets of flowers on a white background. The medallions are framed in ormolu that is sculpted with roses, rinceau, and latticework. On the lid, four circular medallions with floral decorations surround a wide, central medallion representing the story of "The Rape of Europa." According to the myth, Zeus was infatuated with Europa. He decided to seduce her by transforming himself into a tame, white bull, and then he waited for her with the other animals of her father's herds. When Europa saw the uncommonly beautiful bull, she couldn't resist touching him, and then she got onto his back. As soon as she was on his back, Zeus ran with her to the sea and then swam to the island of Crete. The scene on our box represents the episode preceding the ravishing, where Europa is with two of her helpers and a winged cupid. A vulture (a symbol of Jupiter) is on the right of the picture and a sea god is on the left. The scene is richly framed by small beads, crossed ribbons, scrolling foliage, roses, and garlands, circa 1850 Dimension: W 7.5 in, D 4.3in, H 4.9in. Dimension: L 19cm, P 11cm, H 12.5cm.
