About the Item

Gorgeous and very beautiful small jewelry box – Napoleon III style jewelry box, also called Second Empire. It has a very Rococo design. Rococo tends towards fanciful, dynamic and curvilinear forms worked in infinite intertwining. In this piece, ornamental floral motifs invade the pink enamel background. These intricate, curved designs could be found somewhere between Rococo rocaille and oriental-inspired motifs such as chinoiseries. It has various details in different colors such as blue, red, white. The edges, finials and legs in mercury-gilded bronze (using the ormolu technique). Inside it is upholstered in bluish satin and in the lower part of pink satin. The manufacture of furniture and other decorative accessories in gilded bronze was very common, especially in France in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The mercury gilding technique is also known as gilt bronze or also as ormolu, from the French or moulu meaning ground gold, and was used to apply a layer of gold to objects made of metal, especially bronze watches. To gild bronzes using this technique, an alloy of finely ground gold powder was formed with liquid mercury nitrate, applied to the metal object, and the piece was subjected to high temperatures, which made the mercury disappear, leaving a thin layer of gold. strong, stable and durable adhered on the surface.
