17th Century German Silver Gilt Tobacco Box

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique German silver gilt tobacco box; an addition to our 17th century silverware collection. This exceptional antique 17th century German silver gilt tobacco box has an oval form. The surface of this antique box is embellished with impressive engraved interlacing volute scrolling leaf decoration. This antique tobacco box retains the original push fit cover embellished with an impressive engraved scrolling leaf bordered scene depicting a water source with boats and elevated structures. This exceptional box retains the original gilding. This antique silver box was crafted by the collectable silversmith Johann Christoph Treffler. The hallmarks struck to the underside of this impressive box include: Maker's mark: Johan Christoph Treffler City mark: Augsburg, Germany Assay scrape: Zickzack line (Tremolierstrich) This impressive box has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as sterling silver (925, 925/1000). Condition This antique 17th century tobacco box is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The engraved decoration is all very crisp. The hallmarks struck to the underside of the box are all very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this example of antique 18th century silverware.
