Antique Sterling Silver Vinaigrette by Samuel Pemberton

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George III English sterling silver vinaigrette made by Samuel Pemberton; an addition to our silver boxes collection This antique Georgian vinaigrette, in sterling silver, has a rounded rectangular cut cornered form. The surface of the box is embellished with fine and impressive engraved and wriggle work decorated Greek key decoration, incorporating a cartouche to the centre. The cover bears the contemporary engraved name 'J. Bronrn' and the underside of the box remains vacant. The sides of the box are further embellished with pin struck decorated panels. The anterior edge of the hinged silver vinaigrette cover incorporates a plain thumbpiece and allows access to the hinged pierced decorated gilt grille. The hinged grille incorporates a rectangular cartouche embellished with the contemporary engraved name 'Nelson'*, amidst scrolling decoration and surmounted with a pyramid motif. The interior of this Georgian silver Samuel Pemberton vinaigrette and grille retains the original gilding. NOTE:* Upon the death of Admiral Lord Nelson in 1805 there were a variety of commemorative/souvenir pieces crafted to celebrate the hero's Royal Navy endeavours, including Egyptian campaigns such as The Battle of the Nile. Condition This antique George III Samuel Pemberton vinaigrette is an excellent gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition. The engraved and pin struck decoration is very crisp. Full hallmarks struck to the interior of the vinaigrette are very clear, in keeping with age and location. Reflections in photographs may detract from this fine sterling silver vinaigrette.
