Featuring multiple Landscape Scenes
From our Collectables collection, we are delighted to introduce this Antique Papier Mache Snuff Box. The Snuff Box is a beautiful and rare example in original condition made from papier mache with each panel expertly hand painted displaying various traditional English scenes including farming, hunting, wildlife, foliage and mountains. The top scene features a harbour with a large galleon and various people queuing to load the ship. The interior of the snuff box still retains a good amount of the original silver foil lining. The Snuff Box is a superb example from the Georgian period and dated to George III circa 1770.
Provenance the Antique Papier Mache Snuff Box is accompanied by antique paper cuttings dating to 1933 and an auction listing for the snuff box.
Papier Mache often spelled paper mache, is a composite material made from paper pieces or pulp, which is sometimes reinforced with textiles and held together by an adhesive like glue, starch, or wallpaper paste.
Snuffboxes were used for containing snuff which is a mixture of ground tobacco and scented oils. Originally from the Americas Snuff became extremely popular in 18th century Europe, it was seen as a status symbol and undertaken by the elite in society. Commissioned snuff boxes of various materials would be bought by high status individuals as a sign of wealth and power. Snuff boxes became highly prized by collectors from 19th century when snuff was slowly phased out.
