About the Item
This very fine George III Pocket Nutmeg Grater was made in London in 1802 by Thomas Phipps & Edward Robinson. This example is of a large size for a pocket example and may well have been also used on the table. This piece is of a deep, broad rectangular, form with cut corners. The cover and base are beautifully engraved with trellis work designs, containing roundels, all surrounded by a prick dot and engraved, outer, bead frame. The base shows a finely concealed hinge, typical of the quality of the work of Phipps and Robinson. The sides are plain in design, with a reeded girdle and the cover opens to reveal the contemporary steel grater. This piece is in excellent condition and is fully marked on the cover, with the sterling mark on the sides, and with the maker's mark and sterling mark on the base opening. The quality of design and production is exceptional, as would be expected from these premier box makers.
