About the Item
Rare and Unusual Scottish Silver Mounted Snuff Box With Attached Spoon By Andrew Wilkie c1838/39. The initials on the silver mounts on the horn base match the initials on the attached silver spoon. The snuff box was made by Andrew Wilkie, a Dundee silversmith, but was assayed in Edinburgh. Silver by Wilkie is found with both Dundee marks and with Edinburgh marks, as is the case with other Scottish provincial silversmiths. The double markings were brought about by the imposition of the duty on hallmarked silver. According to Turner (Directory of Scottish provincial silversmiths and their marks), certain makers had a proportion of their silver fully stamped in Edinburgh, to keep their registration as a silversmith valid - and to keep the Revenue service happy that duty was being paid. The fully hallmarked snuff spoon is attached on a chain to the boxes cover. Snuff spoons with holes were designed to measure and sift snuff, a form of powdered tobacco popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. The holes allowed finer powder to pass through, reducing waste and ensuring a measured amount for inhalation.
