18th Century Burl Walnut Tea Caddy
About the Item
An early 18th century, George I period bombé-shaped tea caddy in dramatically figured burl walnut of a most desirable mellow, honey colour; complete with three tins inside.
British or Anglo-Dutch, circa 1740s.
An incredibly rare early example, undoubtedly to be coveted by collectors and aesthetes alike.
Why we like it
If the rarity wasn't enough, its gorgeously figured burl walnut veneers and decorative metalware are second to none! A truly standout addition to any important collection.
Absolutely love its rare diminutive proportions and the unusual, early shape with and extra curve at the top and the lid, having a confident ogee profile.
The influence of French furniture was predominant in Europe during the 18th century. Bombé shapes, with surfaces curved in three dimensions, were a feature of the Louis XV (Quinze) period, later dubbed the rococo style.
A wonderfully decorative object that has survived in excellent condition. Complete with the three lidded tin canisters inside.
Tea being an expensive commodity in the 18th century, it was stored in bespoke containers like this tea caddy to preserve its quality as well as to impress the guests who were invited to a tea party.
