19th Century Regency Tea Caddy from Westminster Hall Roof

About the Item

A relic from one of the most historic and venerated structures in English history, this tea caddy is a rare survivor from the renovations to Westminster Hall in preparations for the coronation of George IV in 1821. The box is a classical sarcophagus form with simple brass ornamented handles and feet. The piece is made from the famous 14th century "Hammer-beam" roof supports of the Hall. The plaque reads "Spanish Chesnut from the Old Roof of Westminster Hall Built by Wm Rufus 1089 Rebuilt in the reign of Richard the 2nd and thoroughly repaired by George the IV for his Coronation 1821." Westminster Hall is the oldest building surviving in Parliament and is most intact structure of the ancient Palace of Westminster. Originally built in 1097 under William II, called Rufus, son of William the Conqueror, the Hall was the largest of its kind in Europe in its day. The roof of the structure was rebuilt in 1393 at the direction of Richard II. Royal chief mason, Henry Yevele and carpenter High Herland were responsible for the design of the new roof which has been heralded as one of the most important carpentry projects undertaken in Medieval Europe. The timber which is in fact Scottish oak, was raised to the height of 92 feet and spanned 60 feet unsupported and clad with lead estimated at a weight of 176 tons. Under Sir John Soane who pronounced the north facade unstable, the Hall's edifice was completely rebuilt in 1819 in careful observation of the original design. During this reconstruction, the timber section which was made into the present tea caddy was removed. Later in the year 1821, the Prince Regent was celebrated as the new King of England in a lavish feast, the last to be held in the space ending a tradition dating to 1189 with the crowning of Richard the Lionheart.
