About the Item
An Absolutely Stunning Identical Pair of English Sterling Silver Eighteenth Century style Tea Caddies early Twentieth Century after an Eighteenth-Century model.
Rococo style, each with stylish inverted baluster body with decorative floral and “C” scroll chasing, standing on plain stepped circular bases, the covers with urn form finials.
Mark of CSH & S for Silversmiths Harris and Sons Limited
Assayed in London 1909.
Condition: Superb, no imperfections, nice clear markings. Complete with original firm fitting covers.

The firm of C.S. Harris & Sons Ltd. - which began as a producer of silver spoons and forks - was to develop and into a major manufacturer of silver and plated wares and a supplier to retail establishments in England and abroad by the 1870s.
The company of C.S Harris & Sons Ltd. as it is known today began in 1817, and is thought to have been started by John Mark Harris, who had been a spoon maker by trade.
Although lacking substantial historical records, it seems that the business was carried on by John Robert Harris, who is likely to have been John Mark Harris's son. In 1843 he moved the business to larger premises in Hatton Garden, London, and he stayed in this location until 1852.
Initially Charles Stuart Harris & Sons Ltd. were only creating spoons and forks, then later they began expanding their production into cutlery and flatware.
In 1852 the business passed to Charles Stuart Harris, who was registered as an electro spoon and fork maker, electro plater and gilder and manufacturer of plated wares and, most importantly, a silversmith.
The company was registered under the name of Charles Stuart Harris in 1881, and was gaining a reputation at this point for their utilitarian flatware, often following 18th century and early 19th century designs. Their line of silverware expanded to include salvers and tea trays, tea and coffee services, cups, bowls, dinner wares, and condiment sets.
Harris’ workshop expanded in 1885 and then again 1897 after the business acquired the respective manufactories of the Houle and Harris brothers.
By 1897 – at which point the business became a limited liability company under the name C. H Harris Ltd. - it was also dealing in a wide range of related goods, such as wire and lace, silver, gold, diamonds jewellery, watches and cutlery.
Harris retired shortly after the turn of the 20th century, and died on 23 September 1918. His business operated and traded under his name until its merger with I. Freeman and Company in 1933.

An exceptionally rare Irish George III hand cut full lead crystal single tea caddy of rectangular outline with canted corners and outstanding quality, first quarter of the nineteenth century.
The finely chased silver mounted rim and hinged cover, hand cut with three bands of lozenges on a plain ground, decorative star cut base underneath.
Condition: Exceptional condition for such an early piece, with no losses or clouding inside, silver mounts are unmarked but test positive for silver. Wonderful age wear underneath on base. Lock is present but key does not turn. Back and front views are similar.
Measures: Height: 5.25” (13.5cm). Width: 3.75” (9.5cm). Depth: 3” (7.5cm).

A superb example of a French well figured brass inlaid Rosewood, late Victorian period double interior section tea caddy of flat rectangular outline, generous proportions and outstanding quality, all areas are edged with self-quadrant mouldings, complete with original lock and key. Last quarter of the 19th century.
The hinged cover opens to reveal an original fitted interior of twin smooth lift out finial covers.
Condition: superb condition with no losses to inlays, interior foil linings are quite worn. Baise underneath has wonderful age-wear, very nice untouched surface patination. Lock is present and working, key supplied does not turn mechanism.

A magnificent, fine and impressive pair of antique Georgian English sterling silver tea caddies - boxed; an addition to our silver teaware collection
These magnificent, fine and impressive antique Georgian silver tea caddies each have an oblong, bomb shaped form.
The surface of each antique tea caddy is embellished with impressive chased and embossed scrolling floral and foliate decoration, incorporating paralleling undulating borders framing each side.
The decoration to the body of each incorporates two cartouches, one displaying the contemporary engraved coat of arms depicting an oval escutcheon supported by a savage and a greyhound collared and chained, displaying firstly a stag's head and secondly three bars below three roundels.
The coat of arms bears the motto 'Data fata secutus' - Following the destiny allotted to me*.
These heraldic markings are surmounted with the crest of a mountain in flames, surmounted with the motto 'ÂLuceo non uro' - I shine, not burn*.
The cartouche to the opposing side of each caddy is ornamented with an impressive contemporary engraved crest of a greyhound courant.
