About the Item
Chinese export tea caddy in pomegranate red, made for the English market. This is a beautifully crafted chinoiserie piece with carved brass feet and a richly decorated surface featuring birds and butterflies in a garden setting. The quality and detail are exceptional.
The interior is fitted with Chinese pewter and divided into two sections. Each section has two lids. The second set of lids has an ivory knob on both sides. The interior decoration includes butterflies and shows the same level of refinement as the exterior. The interior depth is three inches.
This tea caddy does not retain its original key. A rare and decorative example of early Chinese export work, combining fine lacquer decoration with functional design.
