Regency Burr Yew Tea Caddy

About the Item

A Delightful Early 19th Century, Regency Period, Burr Yew Wood Tea Caddy Of Sarcophagus Form Having Boxwood Strung Decoration, Original Ormolu Handles To Sides And Hinged Top Enclosing Double Lidded Interior Raised On Brass Ball Feet. This charming early 19th century tea caddy is of typical form for the Regency period in terms of its shape. However it is particualrly unusual having the burr yew wood veneers and the fact that yew is such a decorative and highly sought after wood really adds to the appeal of this piece. Something else which adds to the appeal is the fabulous original ormolu handles to the sides, these are a fabulous feature and they are incredibly elegant. The brass ball feet are also almost certainly original. Tea was a precious commodity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and the purpose of a tea caddy was not just to preserve the and extend the life of the precious tea leaves, but also to enable the owner to lock away those aforementioned valuable tea leaves, keeping them safe from the house staffs potential wandering hands. This tea caddy comes with a fully functioning lock and key, plus has been cleaned and traditionally waxed polished by our highly skilled and well trained specialist antique furniture restorers in our workshops before being offered for sale.
