About the Item

Regency English Penwork Double Tea Caddy, England, Circa 1820 A striking example of Regency-era craftsmanship, this rectangular double tea caddy showcases the elegance and precision of early 19th-century English penwork. The caddy features canted corners and a hinged lid that opens to reveal two distinct compartments, each designed to hold a different variety of tea. Each compartment is fitted with its own lid, topped with a delicately flared knob finial. The entire exterior is adorned in meticulous gold penwork set against a rich black ground. Scrolling vines intertwine with flowering plants and stylized foliage, creating a harmonious and rhythmic surface design. The top is framed by a continuous leafy vine border, echoed by similar decorative bands encircling the base—lending a sense of unity and refinement to the piece. In the center of the cover is an oval metal ring handle. This tea caddy not only reflects the Regency period’s fascination with ornamental detail and symmetry but also serves as a testament to the social rituals surrounding tea culture in Georgian England.
