A Fine French 19th/20th Century Louis XV Style 3-Piece Candelabra Garniture Set
About the Item
A Very Fine French 19th/20th Century Louis XV Style Three-Piece Garniture Set of Ormolu-Mounted Mottled Granite-Marble Urn Seven-Light Candelabras. The shaped urns are similar in variation to the examples, which were originally made for the private apartments of Louis XV at Versailles and now at the Louvre, later produced by Alfred-Emmanuel Beurdeley (1847-1919) and also, in two different sizes, by François Linke (1855-1946). The tapering ovoid bodies applied with a pair of scrolled gilt-bronze handles cast with acanthus-sheathed bulrushes, on a spreading foot and square plinth with acanthus clasps, topped with an ornate scrolled candle-arms, each with a floral design protruding from a clasp of cast-fruits. (Unsigned). Circa: Paris, 1890-1890.
These garniture model of the present vases are after a single example carved in porphyry, formerly in the collection of the Duc de Tallard. At the sale of Tallard's collection in 1756, the vase was purchased for 5,001 livres by the marquis de Marigny, brother of Madame de Pompadour. Following the death of his sister, Marigny lost his position as directeur général des Bâtiments, together with the sumptuously decorated hôtel that came with it, and the vase, together with other contents, were purchased from him by the Crown. Later displayed in the Salon du Premier Consul at the Tuileries, where it remained through to the end of the Second Empire, the vase is now in the collection of the Louvre.
François Linke (d. 1946) was awarded the gold medal for his Grand Bureau at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. He was the most celebrated Ébéniste of his time. Born in Bohemia in 1855, he moved to Paris in 1881. He produced furniture of the highest quality at his workshops at 170, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, and established showrooms at 26, Place Vendme. Some of Linke's early productions were neither signed or stamped.
Alfred-Emmanuel Beurdeley (1847-1919) Specializing in reproductions of the most magnificent articles from the Garde-Meuble National, the Beurdeley firm exhibited and won awards at all of the major international exhibitions during the second half of the nineteenth century. The quality and skill employed in production was of exceptional quality; their bronze mounts with mercury gilding and hand chasing were often difficult to distinguish from late eighteenth-century examples, and were considered the finest in Paris. The firm was pioneered by Jean Beurdeley (1772-1853), later managed by his son Louis-Auguste-Alfred, and finally imparted to his son Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis in 1875. The firm was established at 32 and 34, rue Louis-Le-Grand, and also owned the pavillion de Hanovre, where it was based while Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis added two additional workshops at 20 and 24, rue Dautancourt by 1875. The Beurdeley workshops closed in 1896, although still partially active until 1898 when the stock was sold over a number of auctions conducted by the Galerie Georges Petit of Paris. Two auction catalogues of the collection were published in 1895 and sales were held between March 6-8 and May 27-28. Among Beurdeley's most prestigious clients were Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, the duc D'aumale, Richard Wallace, the Duc and Princess d'Hamilton, Tsarine Alexandra Féodorovna, The Rothschild and Vanderbilt dynasties and the Metropolitan Club, New York.
