Neoclassical Style Marble, Gilt and Patinated Bronze Candelabra by Barbedienne

About the Item

The leading bronze manufactory of the French Belle Époque, Barbedienne, is responsible for the design of these exquisite candelabra. The Barbedienne foundry was established in 1838 by the famous bronzier, Ferdinand Barbedienne. The firm specialised in the production of artistic bronzes, which they sold to the European elite, including members of royalty. Barbedienne won numerous awards for the work they displayed at the great International Exhibitions of the 1850s, 1860s and 1870s. These candelabra are signed, ‘F. Barbedienne’. Each candelabrum features three tiers of gilt bronze branches, which support a total of seven candle-holders. The branches are cast as scrolling vines, draped with foliage swags. They terminate in wide drip-pans and tall, urn-shaped capitals with sconces. The branches spring from the mouths of classical twin-handled Amphora vases, which have been crafted from patinated bronze and parcel gilt. The top and bottom of each vase is gadrooned, and its body decorated with relief depictions of women in classical costume, seated in an interior setting. The vases are placed on square black marble plinths, with waisted and fluted tops. These are mounted with decorative gilt bronze bands, and set on gilt bronze foliate paw feet.

Two Orientalist Patinated and Gilt Bronze Figural Torchères by Barbedienne
By Émile Guillemin, Ferdinand Barbedienne
Located in London, GB
Émile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin, the famous French sculptor, designed these exquisite bronze figural torchères in circa 1880. Guillemin was an accomplished artist, who regularly exhibited at the Salon in Paris from the 1870s-1890s. Indeed, Guillemin showcased the original models for these candelabra at the Salon of 1872 to great acclaim. Guillemin’s designs were realised in bronze by the famous metalworker and foundry owner, Ferdinand Barbedienne. The Barbedienne factory was of the leading producers of artistic bronzes in the 19th century. The firm enjoyed great success, winning multiple awards at the major International Exhibitions of the period. The torchères are signed, ‘Ele Guillemin’ and stamped, ‘F. Barbedienne. Fondeur’, with an ‘A. Collas’ reduction stamp. Described in Barbedienne’s catalogue of 1886 as ‘Deux Femmes, Indienne et Persane’, these torchères take the form of an Indian and Persian woman. Each figure holds a five-light candelabrum above her head, composed of scrolled branches, wide gadrooned drip-pans, and foliate urn-shaped capitals. The Persian woman wears loose trousers, with a small top and short jacket. The Indian woman is dressed in a knotted skirt...

Antique Marble, Patinated and Gilt Bronze Clock Set by Gervais
By Ferdinand Gervais
Located in London, GB
This three-piece set—composed of a clock and a pair of flanking candelabra—is a truly unique and delightful piece of decorative art. The clock is modelled in the image of an 18th century sedan chair – that is, a covered chair sat in by a member of the social elite, which was carried on poles by two people. This chair-shaped clock case is crafted from gilt bronze (ormolu) and decorated with festoons and a flower finial. At its centre, there is a circular white enamel dial, which features Arabic Numbers, colorful swag paintings, and the manufacturer’s name, 'Fd Gervais / Ft du Bronzes / A Paris'. The lower part of the case is glazed, allowing one to see the clock’s sun-burst pendulum. Like a sedan chair, the clock case is carried by two patinated bronze putti...
