Pair of Candelabra 19th Century Louis XVI
About the Item
These large and finely cast candelabrum were made by the well respected bronzier Ferdinand Barbedienne. They are truly exceptional examples of 19th century French craftsmanship. They are decorated in the Louis XVI style and each with three-light branches. Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) is a Parisian bronze maker and caster. In 1839, he created a firm in collaboration with Achille Collas, the inventor of the mechanical method to obtain copies of sculptures at a smaller scale. Under the “Collas et Barbedienne” name, they specialized in Antiquity copies and perfected new chemical methods for the color and patina finish of their bronzes. His creations, specialized in the “Neo-Greek” style, were particularly appreciated for antiquity reference in decorative arts, just like the great mirror preserved by the Orsay Museum. The beautiful ormolu candelabras are draped in leaf-like and pine cone shaped garlands that accentuate the woodland beauty of it. On top of both of the candelabras are placed faces of a women which points towards the spaces bewtween each branches.
